Planning Your Laundry Room Cabinets

How Your Laundry Room Cabinets Relate to the Storage Space in Your Home

Laundry rooms are no different than other parts of most houses: often they lack efficiency in the use of space.

But before you design the cabinet space in your laundry, I suggest you look at the bigger picture as far as home organization goes.

The laundry room is a great place to keep stuff that you do not want to have to go to the garage to get. The better you plan it, the easier it will be to keep it organized.

You May Have More Space than You Think

The bigger picture will tell you what things ideally belong in the laundry room other than what you already know belongs there. It will all depend on how big your laundry room is, and how efficient the existing cabinets are.

Often the existing cabinets are not as tall as they could be nor do they go from wall to wall. Changing this is one way you can improve on your storage space.

You Have Many Options

Depending on the size of your laundry room, you can add:

  • A tall cabinet for brooms, mops and vacuums
  • Cabinets above the washer/dryer for laundry detergents, cleaning supplies, etc.
  • A rod for drying clothes, most often above the sink
  • A little mudroom. It can be a cabinet much like a hallway closet, or a wall unit with the various accessories you need.
  • A cabinet to replace a missing linen closet
  • A pull out ironing board with your ironing supplies
  • Drawers
  • Hampers

Almost anything goes.

Looks

This is one room that is almost always white, and so are the laundry room cabinets.

You can also make them match other existing cabinets or the colorful washer and dryer you just bought. for example, I have installed beautiful grey cabinets to match the appliances.
