Why Ask the Question: How to Organize Your Garage?

On the page Home Organization, I suggest that the garage be as well organized and tidy as the rest of the house. Now why would that be?

The first reason is that it is much easier to live in a place where things can be found and put away without waste of time and energy. A cluttered garage is like a weight you carry constantly and are reminded of daily.
Another reason is simply that the garage is part of your home as it is for so many nowadays the most used entrance.
It is what your children see first when they are picked up from school and it is what you reveal to your neighbors every time you open the garage door.
A messy garage implies that you have stuff that is not worth your attention, but that you are still holding onto -for what?
Last but not least, any disorder in the garage is going to carry over into the house and affect everyone as things are not found easily or accumulated in an ugly dirt-catching pile.

I think these are plenty of reasons to figure out how to organize your garage in a way that will support your everyday life and your family life.

Some will say "It is just a garage" as others will say "It is just a closet". I have to disagree with that. (Read more of my thoughts about home organization.)

I would say garage organization is about the extra space we create to put away the items that we own that do not fit in the house.

Some of these we will go to frequently, as with paper goods or pantry items that we store there.
Others we will use periodically as with Christmas decorations and off-season clothing.
Yet others may be long term storage as with that old piece of furniture you inherited and do not yet know what to do with.

How often we use them is going to determine where they go and how accessible they are.

Giving this some thought as we move in helps define what stays in the garage, and what has its place in the house. As we gain more clarity about what categories of personal belongings stay in the garage, the answers to the question: How to Organize Your Garage? fall into place.
