A hallway closet allows for your family and guests to hang their coats when they come home, and possibly leave shoes there too. In some families, it is replaced by a wall unit that accommodates the children's coats, boots, gloves, backpacks and the accessories the whole family needs when they leave the house.
This type of closet should be as close to the entrance of the house as possible. If you enter through the garage most of the time, you may have one near the garage door. In many homes built since the 80's, it may be replaced by a mudroom.

Most of the time though, hallway closets are around 30" wide and they are just big enough for what you need to have there. Often it is necessary to empty it out of off-season clothes just to have the room you need. In some cases, there is really no other place for the vacuum cleaner and you can plan a special tall and narrow section that will accommodate it.
